The Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (GIA) has been acting there for more than 20 years developing human resources and research projects in partenership with governamental and no-governamental entities. Some exemples includes the Brazillian Bank, Petrobrás (Oil Company), Hospital de Clínicas from Porto Alegre, and another international institutions as University os Lisbon (Portugal); National University of Colombia, Polytechnic Institute of Grenoble, Minas School of Paris (France), Techincal University of Darmstadt, TU Berlin (Germany), City University London, Cambridge University, Kings College and Durham University (UK).
The research area includes the following themes:
- Complex Systems: traffic simulation, trafic control, Game Theory, Models and Tools for Social Simulation.
- Image Processing: Image analysis by computer for pattern recognition, alteration detection and information extraction.
- Knowledge Discovery and Management and Data Mining: information extraction about databases, include distributing.
- Corporate Memories: Cases reuse, knowledge extraction of document bases.
- Systems to support decision-making: systems to support credit classification, failure diagnosis and equipment monitoring.
- Fraud Detection: fraud detection systems using AI techniques.
- Natural Language Processing and Speech Recognition: development of techniques and systems to interact with computers by written/said text.
- Tools and systems to support the construction of electronic dictionaries and analysis of written texts (newspapers, magazines, blogs ...).
- Informatics in Education: development of distance teaching systems and mobile (in cel phones, palmtops ...).
- Intelligent tutors and sytems for detection of profiles of system students that operate on the web.
- Intelligent Games: techniques and systems development of remote intelligent games and mobile devices (in cel phones, palmtops ...).
- Intelligent and Autonomous Robotics: robotics systems that use artificial intelligence techniques for autonomous processing.
- Bioinformatics: techniques and systems to support genome sequencing.
