The Institute of Informatics coordinates undergraduate programs in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, graduate programs in Computing, Microelectronics, Informatics in Education, and the Center for Entrepreneurship in Informatics. The Dean and Deputy Dean of the Institute of Informatics are Prof. Dr. Carla Maria Dal Sasso Freitas and Prof. Dr. Luciano Paschoal Gaspary.

Undergraduate Programs

Our Undergraduate Programs are ranked among the best in Brazil by the Ministry of Education and independent assessors as Folha de São Paulo and Editora Abril.

Computer Science (Bachelor)

Our Computer Science undergraduate course was created in 1983 and restructured to its current form by 1995. Our students are qualified to design, develop, implement and manage computer systems in different contexts. Every year, 100 Computer Science students join the program.

Computer Engineering (Bachelor)

Our Computer Engineering undergraduate course was created in 1998. Our students are qualified to work in areas in which Electronics and Computing are complementary. Every year, 60 Computer Engineering students join the program.

Graduate Programs

Our Graduate Programs act in many aspects of Informatics, offer Master’s and Ph.D. degrees, and are highly rated according to CAPES/Ministry of Education.

PPGC – Graduate Program in Computing

Our Graduate Program in Computing (PPGC) is among the oldest in Brazil, created in 1973. It is known for its excellence in teaching and research. PPGC covers almost all subareas of Computer Science and counts with more than 50 faculty members. PPGC attains the highest score (7-excellent) as regulated by CAPES/Ministry of Education. PPGC offers Master’s and Ph.D. level degrees to train researchers, professors, and highly qualified professionals.

PGMICRO – Graduate Program in Microelectronics

Our Graduate Program in Microelectronics (PGMICRO) originated from the proposal of a group of Professors from this University who applied to the CAPES call “Invitation for the Presentation of Doctoral Programs in Bioinformatics and Microelectronics” in 2002. PGMICRO has a multidisciplinary scope with more than 20 faculty members. It embraces micro and nanotechnology in cooperation with other centers of this University, such as the School of Engineering, Institute of Physics, the Insitute of Chemistry. PGMICRO offers Master’s and Ph.D. level degrees to train researchers, professors, and highly qualified professionals.

PPGIE – Graduate Program in Informatics in Education

Our Graduate Program in Informatics in Education (PPGIE), created in 1996, acts in an interdisciplinary area to provide in-depth studies on digital technologies in Education. PPGIE has 30 faculty members, offers a Ph.D. degree, and trains highly-qualified professionals to exercise teaching, research, and extension activities.

Center for Entrepreneurship in Informatics

The Center for Entrepreneurship in Informatics (Centro de Empreendimentos em Informática – CEI), founded in 1996, is a special division of the Institute acting as a technology incubator supporting innovative projects in IT. CEI aims to foster and strengthen the development of IT Entrepreneurships, lending technical support to technological innovation. CEI was the first technology incubator founded in southern Brazil and is rated as a reference model by Brazilian assessment agencies. Since 1997, CEI has incubated over 30 new IT companies.
