CMP 233: Multimedia Data Processing and Management (Graduate Course, Second Semester)

OBJECTIVES: Present multimedia data processing and management concepts, overview current approaches for multimedia data compression, communication, indexing and retrieval. This course has theoretical and practical components, and provides opportunities for students to apply multimedia data processing and management techniques to practical problems.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Introduction to Multimedia: multimedia environments, multimedia objects, multimedia databases, multimedia applications (tele-conferencing, video-on-demand, etc.), multimedia networking, examples and problems.

Image Compression : introduction to image compression (PCM, Huffman, Run-Length, Predictive), transform-based compression (DFT, DCT, Haar, K-L,Wavelet, Vector Quantization), JPEG, overview of JPEG2000, examples and problems.

Video Compression : motion estimation, hybrid DCT-MC video coding, overview of MPEG-1 standard, MPEG-2 scalable coding, H.26x, image/video analysis, temporal segmentation, object-based coding in MPEG-4, MPEG-7, examples and problems.

Processing of Uncompressed and Compressed Video : hierarchical video partitioning, video retrieval, examples and problems

Representation and Retrieval of Visual Content : feature extraction, color, texture, shape, spatial relationships, semantics, examples and problems

Multimedia Information Retrieval : content-based retrieval, Boolean, vector, probabilistic models, examples and problems

Indexing Methods : primary and secondary key access methods, spatial access methods, examples and problems

Dimensionality Reduction and Information Retrieval: Karhunen-Loeve (K-L), Singular Value Decomposition (SVD), other approaches, examples and problems
