Academic Experience
  • March 1998 - Present :   Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Porto Alegre, Brazil. Professor and Associate Professor of Computer Science since 1998; Professor across Computer Science Institute and Electrical Engineering Graduate Programme. Leader of the Image Processing and Computer Vision Group (Institute of Computer Science). Current research interests : image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, imaging measurements and their applications.

  • April 1996 - February 1998 : Federal School of Engineering at Itajubá (EFEI), Itajubá, Brazil. Appointed Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering 1996.

  • August 1994 - March 1996 : University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. NSERC Post-Doctoral Research Fellow, across Pulp and Paper Center and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

  • August 1985 - April 1989 : Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, Brazil. Appointed Lecturer in Computer Science 1985, Assistant Professor 1988, Chair of Continuing Education Program 1988 - April 1989.


Industrial Experience
  • July 1993 --- July 1994 : Morphometrix Inc./MDS Laboratories/National Research Council (NRC), Toronto, Canada. Senior Research Scientist; researched and developed image processing algorithms and software tools to be included in a pre-screener prototype for Papanicolau smears, supervised 1 junior researcher, and performed administrative tasks. The results obtained in this work were essential to the approval of Can$ 5.000.000,00 in funding, to develop the next phase of the project.

  • June 1987--- April 1988 : Metrixer Industrial Automation Inc., Novo Hamburgo, Brazil. Electrical Engineer. Developed automation projects for the shoe manufacturing industry (industrial sawing machines, and leather area measurement instruments).

  • April 1983--- January 1984 : CGR/Brazilian Company of Radiology, Săo Paulo, Brazil. Electrical Engineer. Installed and maintained medical imaging equipment (X-Rays, Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound).


   Summary of Research Activities

He holds a cross appointment with the Department of Electrical Engineering at UFRGS, and also is an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Systems Design Engineering, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He has authored and co-authored over 150 refereed journal and conference papers, 3 books, 10 book chapters. In addition to his academic publications, he has several technology transfers to the private sector. Presently, he serves as an Associate Editor for three journals, and has served on dozens of International Conference Committees. Professor Scharcanski is a licensed Professional Engineer, Senior Member of the IEEE, and serves as Chair of the Technical Committee IEEE IMS TC-17 (Materials in Measurements) and as Co-Chair of the Technical Committee IEEE IMS TC-19 (Imaging Measurements and Systems). His areas of expertise are image processing, computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, imaging measurements and their  applications.
