last update on April 2012

My name is Ronnie Alves and I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Informatics at UFRGS. Currently, investigating data mining methods and algorithms for transcriptomic data analysis (see MOBIO). Before, I was a Post-doc in the Virtual Biology Lab at the Institute of Developmental Biology and Cancer at Nice (France).
During my PhD I devised multidimensional data mining methods for on-line multidimensional analysis in Retail and Telecommunications.

My research interests are related to the development of methods and algorithms for knowledge discovery in business and scientific databases, with emphasis to:
-OLAP Mining (data cubing algorithms)
-Ranking (multidimensional mining, top-k algorithms, change analysis)
-Graph-based algorithms (cliques, paths, centrality)
-Association mining (frequent patterns, interestingness metrics)
-Ensemble strategies (ensemble learning, meta-analysis, meta-learning)

MOBIO - PNPD project, Capes (Brazil) - Start:Mar'2010  End:Feb'2013
MOBIO stands for Methods and Algorithms for Biochemical Data Analysis. The main goal is, essentialy, to study and provide robust mining strategies for genome wide association studies in pharmacogenomics.
Related areas: bioinformatics, data mining & transcriptomics.

It is essential...that when we face difficulties of whatever sort not to let them paralyze us. If we do, we are in danger of being totally overwhelmed by them. Instead, using our critical faculties, we should examine the nature of the problem itself. If we find it is such that there exists the possibility we could solve it by some means or other, there is no need for anxiety. The rational thing would then be to devote all ones energy to finding that means and acting upon it...If nothing can change the situation, worrying only makes it worse.
