Short Biography
I'm the equivalent of an Associate Professor in the Applied Informatics Department of the Institute of Informatics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil.
In the year of 2008 I performed a post-doctoral stage at the TELECOM & Management SudParis (former Institut National des Télécommunications - INT), France. This was part of a fellowship project entitled AdContext, which is sponsored by a CAPES-COFECUB agreement. In this sense, I acted as an invited researcher in the databases group of their Computer Science Department.
I'm member of the Information Systems Research Group at UFRGS. I'm also member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), ACM-SIGMOD, ACM-SIGKDD, ACM-SIGIR, IEEE Computer Society, and of the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC).
My research activities are related to text mining and information extraction, retrieval and recommendation (see my "research interests" below). You can see a list of my publications clicking here.
In 2004 I received a Doctor degree in Computer Science at UFRGS. My project was about "cluster analysis" and I worked to deal with textual data. My advisor was José Palazzo Moreira de Oliveira.
I have a master degree from the same university (UFRGS), obtained in the year of 1999. The focus of my work was to study how to build and use text mining techniques to give competitive advantage to enterprises (Competitive Intelligence). My advisors were José Mauro Volkmer Castilho (in memoriam) and José Palazzo Moreira de Oliveira.
My graduation was finished in 1996 at Catholic University of Pelotas (UCPEL), in a medium city in the south of Brazil. I focused my research in the Information Retrieval field and was advised by Stanley Loh, my friend and research partner.
I was born in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
