The Intelligent Databases Group (BDI) was established in 1993 at the Institute of Informatics, UFRGS, focusing on research and development of information systems with capacities of semantic representation and reasoning. Recently, the contribution of the group has been in Knowledge Engineering within the following topics:

  • Conceptual modeling and
  • Ontologies
  • Visual knowledge
  • Knowledge representation and reasoning
  • Cognitive computing

The group has a tradition of applied research and interdisciplinarity. Particularly, it has produced notable contribution in the development of scientific applications for Petroleum Geology.

The BDI Group strives to approximate research and industry, transferring technology to society through partnerships with companies and research institutes. One of its main results, the PetroGrapher Project, has generated the Petroledge® system and the company ENDEEPER (www.endeeper.com). The Petroledge® is used in support of the assessment of petroleum reservoirs in laboratories, universities and international companies, including Petrobras. Also, in a cooperation with the Robotic group has led the ontology development of the IEEE P1872-2015 – Standard Ontologies for Robotics and Automation, adopted in the automation industry
