The Rise of DDoS attacks: why, how, and what we can do about it
May 12th, 09:30 am - 10:30 amAbstract: Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks continue to be a major threat of the Internet today. Lately, they are becoming bigger (665 Gbps confirmed), easier to be carried out with the rise of IoT botnets, and more frequent. DDoS attacks are particularly challenging if they hit the core parts of the Internet, such as the Root DNS System and big DNS providers, such as Dyn 1.2 TB DDoS attacks in October 2016.
Underlying these attacks, there is an entire series of actors and legacy design choices that have provided ways for malicious actors to carry out such activities. While such attacks were extremely difficult to coordinate in the past, they can be now hired online as a service for few dollars.
In this talk, we will cover why this is happening, how these attacks are taking place, the mismatch incentives in attacking/defending, and what can be done in order to mitigate the impact of such attacks. Solutions for this problem are likely not to stay only in the technology realm; policy makers will eventually need to be more directly involved.
Biography: Giovane Moura is a Data scientist with SIDN Labs, and work on security & performance research projects. Prior to SIDN, Dr. Moura worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Delft University of Technology, in The Netherlands. He obtained my Ph.D. degree with Prof. Aiko Pras at the University of Twente, with focus on both active and passive Internet measurements.
