The project LAGClima aims at using the computational Grid that has been set-up in the former project (AMSUD-GBRAMS) between the international partners, to perform the computation of a mesoscale climatology of the region of the Rio de la Plata, and of the Peruvian part of the Andes. A period up to 10 years will be simulated. The simulation tool is the BRAMS software, developed by the Brazilian institution: Center for Weather Prediction and Climate Studies (CPTEC-INPE).
Since supercomputers are very expensive to be largely employed in South-America for such simulations, the Grid alternative has been contemplated with interest. Grid Computing has emerged in the late 90’s has a highly-distributed platform that enables the execution of parallel jobs in heterogeneous and dynamic resources, in general owned by distinct institutions. The former AMSUD G-BRAMS project has built upon these previous experiments to set up a Grid infrastructure to perform Mesoscale Climatology simulations, at the continental level (thus simulating the whole Southern American Cone).
This continuation aims at using this infra-structure to simulate the climatology of two specific regions: the rio da Plata on one side; and the Peruvian part of Les Andes on the other. Focusing these specific parts will enable a much more precise simulation. In the case of the Rio da Plata, of mutual interest of both Uruguay and Argentina, the new climatology will enable a study of the diffusion of polluting materials in the river. In the case of the Peruvian simulation, the climatology will make it possible to refine the description of the flow of the underground water on water-bearing slabs.
The main outcomes of the project will be:
