About ONTOBRAS 2026
Ontology is an interdisciplinary field that studies concepts and theories that provide the foundation for constructing and formalizing shared conceptualizations of specific domains. In recent years, we have observed growing interest in applying ontologies to solve modeling and classification problems across several areas, including Computer Science, Information Science, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Knowledge Management, Biomedicine, and the Semantic Web.
The Brazilian Seminar on Ontology Research (ONTOBRAS) provides a scientific environment for researchers and professionals from these and other areas to exchange knowledge about theories, methodologies, languages, tools, and experiences related to the theoretical foundations, development, and application of ontologies.
In its 19th edition, ONTOBRAS 2026 continues a tradition that began in 2005 in Brazil and has been recognized by the Brazilian Ontology Community as the unique, highly qualified scientific forum for the presentation and discussion of ontologies and application cases in Brazil.
ONTOBRAS 2026 will take place on September 23, 2026, co-located with FOIS 2026 (16th International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems). We invite the entire Brazilian ontology community to participate in FOIS, from September 21 to 25, 2026. However, for those who wish to attend ONTOBRAS exclusively, there will be a one-day registration option (one-day pass).
ONTOBRAS 2026 and FOIS 2026 will take place in person at Hotel SENAC Ilha do Boi.
Address:
Rua Bráulio Macedo, 417, Ilha do Boi, Vitória (ES), Brazil.

Support
ONTOBRAS is supported by the International Association for Ontology and its Applications
(IAOA), a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. IAOA also promotes forums for the development of ontological analysis applications in conceptual modeling, knowledge engineering, knowledge management, information systems development, library and information science, scientific research, and semantic technologies in general.
The ONTOBRAS proceedings have been published under the
IAOA series of
CEUR-WS.org since 2019, and the Brazilian seminar is part of its official events calendar.
Join IAOA and become part of this international community. Individual membership is free, and members enjoy a
range of benefits, including free access to IOS Press publications relevant to the field of ontology:
-
- Applied Ontology – Journal on Ontological Analysis and Conceptual Modeling
- Proceedings of the International Conference on Formal Ontology in Information Systems (FOIS)
- Proceedings of the International Workshop on Formal Ontologies meet Industry (FOMI)
