We are the Neurocognition and Natural Language Processing research lab, an interdisciplinary group linked to the Institute of Physics, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) (Brazil) and Department of Computer Science, University of Sheffield (UK). We work in the intersection of the exciting fields of cognition, neuroscience and computational linguistics, trying to build systems and models for the integration of human languages into computers.

Our group is headed by Marco Idiart and Aline Villavicencio.

Research interests

Our general research interests are in the fields of neurosciences, cognition and language. We are particularly interested in:

  • Biologically inspired computational models of brain structures
  • Computational cognitive models of language acquisition and evolution
  • Computational methods of lexical acquisition
  • Corpus-based natural language processing
  • Multiword expressions identification and treatment
  • Applications in human language technology
