Abstract: Avionics systems using Open Systems Architectures have been explored in order to allow easier reuse, reduced costs and time-to-field due to their modularity. FACE is a framework defined to achieve these goals for avionics applications through the use of abstraction layers. However, the insertion of abstraction layers may impose overheads that could jeopardize systems key features. This work discusses and quantifies these impacts upon FACE usage. The results provide evidence that attention is required regarding performance for certain applications running over embedded hardware.
