International cooperation approved by Capes

UFRGS and Université Pierre et Marie Curie will work in a project on Structural Bioinformatics

divulgacao projeto dorn3The Brazilian research funding agency, CAPES, has approved an international cooperation project between the Institute of Informatics at UFRGS(INF) and Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris/France). Among the 19 proposals accepted by CAPES, in the Stic-Amsud call, is the one from INF’s Laboratory of Structural Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, entitled “PadMetBio: Development of Parallel and Distributes Methauristics for Problems of Structural Bioinformatics”, coordinated by Prof. Márcio Dorn.

Within Structural Bioinformatics, there are various problems that, until now, do not present a computational method to guarantee a minimum quality of its solutions. Despite advancements of current technologies and computational power, clusters and cloud computing, it is not possible to solve these problems. Among them, two are the most challenging: predicting the tridimensional structure of macromolecules and the problem of molecular docking present in the area of drug development.

The main goal of the research is to unite the experience of scholars involved in the areas of Structural Bioinformatics, Metaheuristics, and Parallel and Distributed Computing to build interdisciplinary high quality solutions for these important biological problems. The international cooperation involves researchers from UFRGS, Universidad Nacional de San Luis (Argentina), Universidad de Santiago de Chile (Chile) and Université Pierre et Marie Curie (France).
