Research Groups | Computer Graphics, Image Processing, and Interaction

The research group in Computer Graphics, Image Processing and Interaction covers various research topics related to these three areas.

The issues associated with computer graphics include modeling and rendering of complex objects and natural physics-based simulation (especially human-body organs and modeling tools for virtual surgery), animation (involving deformation and motion and path planning), techniques and algorithms for computer games, spatial data structures, geometric algorithms and use of graphics hardware for solving computationally expensive problems.

Research in Image Processing, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition is focused on the processing of visual information, techniques and applications of filtering, enhancement, segmentation and images analysis and videos from various sources. Research topics are also modeling and recognition of objects in scenes, finding a wide range of applications in real problems such as medical imaging, tracking and face recognition or people’s behavior, content image retrieval, 3D photography, metrology for images, intelligent vehicles, augmented reality, among others.

Research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) includes technological, methodological and conceptual interaction aspects. From the technological point of view, new techniques and interactive devices are being explored, such as: development of 3D interfaces, non-conventional interaction, natural interaction techniques, accessibility, and adaptive multimodal interaction. This work has applications in mobile devices, immersive virtual reality environments, games, and medical applications. We also investigate the integration of these interfaces with other areas of computing, such as Visualization, Software Engineering and Computer Music. Also studied are the fundamental issues of HCI, such as modeling interaction and usability evaluation.

Research in Visualization covers research techniques of information visualization and scientific data, preferably focusing on problems involving large and/or complex data. Visualization of medical data, applications for the oil industry, biodiversity information, display applications, visualization and analysis of social networks are some examples of recent work in this area of the group.
