I work on Natural Language Processing, with a focus on Portuguese, in fields that carry their own technical vocabulary and leave very little annotated data behind: geology, law, health, language teaching. Mostly named entity recognition, information extraction and text generation.

Two things hold my attention. How these systems are evaluated, because a benchmark can quietly stop measuring what it promises. And the meeting point between computing and other disciplines, where the questions worth answering usually come from the people who know the domain.

GEORESERVOIR

Studies the geometry of sedimentary deposits that form oil reservoirs, so that descriptions from different sources can be mapped onto a single conceptual model and queried parametrically. Combines a formal ontology, cognitive vision over seismic and outcrop images, and data mining over the resulting database.
