Call for Master Course Applications

SELECTION PROCESS FOR MASTER'S COURSE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS NUMBER 004/2023 (for admissions from August to October 2023)

This call establishes the conditions, deadlines, and procedures for the selection of candidates to enroll in the Master’s Degree in Computer Science, offered publicly and free of charge by the Graduate Program in Computing (PPGC) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

  1. Positions

Art. 1°. The positions offered for the Master’s course with admission from August to October 2023 were distributed by line of research in proportion to the advising capacity of the Graduate Program in Computing. There is a limit of 100 positions for this call.

Art. 2°. According to CONSUN Resolution No. 015 of January 13, 2023, which creates the Affirmative Action Program for Stricto Sensu Graduate Studies (Masters and Doctorates) within the scope of UFRGS, the PPGC will provide at least 30% (thirty per percent) of academic Master’s positions for historically and socially discriminated groups in the Brazilian society, especially the following groups: I – black and brown people; II – indigenous people; III – Quilombolas people; IV – people with disabilities; V – transgender; VI – refugees or people with a humanitarian visa; VII – migrants in conditions of social vulnerability.

  • 1° – To compete for positions related to Affirmative Actions, candidates must complete a self-declaration form and submit it at the time of registration, as described in Section V. Procedures for Registration. This form can be accessed on the PPGC/UFRGS website (https://www.inf.ufrgs.br/ppgc/mestrado/formularios/). At the time of registration, the candidate for the position related to Affirmative Actions whose profile allows more than one option for these positions must choose one of the modalities listed in Art. 2nd, by completing the specific self-declaration form, being automatically excluded from the others. It will not be allowed to change this option during the process. Candidates who do not complete the self-declaration form will be considered as candidates in the open call.
  • 2° – The ranking of candidates for positions related to Affirmative Action will be done according to the result of the stages of the selection process described in Section III. Selection Procedures.
  • 3° – If positions reserved for Affirmative Actions are not filled, they may be filled by candidates registered in the broad competition modality.
  • 4° – The verification process of self-declarations and supporting documents for inclusion in the groups defined in Art. 2, with the purpose of assessing and approving the admission of groups to the Affirmative Action Program for Postgraduate Studies, will be carried out by a specific committee, designated by PROPG, as described in Resolution No. 015 of CONSUN, of January 13, 2023.
  1. Scholarships

Art. 3°. The Master’s in Computer Science course of PPGC/UFRGS is offered publicly and free of charge, without needing enrollment fees, paid enrollment renewals or monthly fees during the course period.

  • 1° – The program offers scholarships from public funding agencies, as financial aid, to carry on with the studies during the Master’s course.
  • 2 – The availability of scholarships offered by the program will depend on the number of scholarships to be received from public funding agencies.
  • 3° – Scholarships in the program can only be claimed by candidates who will take the course with full-exclusive dedication, and will be offered in order of classification.
  • 4 – The PPGC/UFRGS also has scholarships linked to the projects of the program’s professors. These scholarships are managed by the professors themselves.

III. Selection Procedures

Art. 4°. The selection process will be conducted by the lines of research and coordinated by the PPGC Graduate Commission, which will be responsible for publishing the list of selected candidates, in accordance with the provisions of Art. 1 and Art. 2nd, and for the judgment of any appeals.

Art. 5°. The candidate must select one main line of research, and optionally other lines of research of interest, indicating them in the appropriate field of the application form, in order of preference. Additionally, the candidate may also indicate an ordered list of supervisors of their preference, based on the intended lines of research and any prior knowledge of the supervisors and their work. Candidates are strongly recommended to contact potential advisors prior to applying.

  • 1° – Candidates may also indicate preference for any supervisor of a line of research.

Art. 6°. For ranking purposes, the score computed by the main line of research indicated by the candidate at the time of registration will be considered. If the candidate is not selected by the line of research marked as main, he/she may still be selected by another line of research.

Art. 7°. The candidate who is selected by a PPGC research line will be considered qualified for admission to the Master’s.

Art.  8°. The following criteria will be considered for evaluation:

  • 1° – Each line of research will take into account, in the preparation of its list of selected candidates, the following criteria: Academic Performance evaluated through analysis of the Academic Transcript, Curriculum Vitae, Letters of Recommendation, grade in the POSCOMP (optional) and Adequacy of the profile of candidates for the line of research.
  • 2° – If the candidate has taken the POSCOMP exam (https://www.sbc.org.br/poscomp/) in 2021 or 2022 and indicates in the registration form that the score obtained in the exam should be considered for this process selection, the following evaluation criteria will be considered:
DA: Academic Achievement
  • POSCOMP (up to 30 points)
  • Academic Transcript (up to 20 points)
  • Curriculum Vitae (up to 20 points)
  • Recommendation letters (up to 30 points)
Up to 100 points
AL: Adequacy of the profile of candidates to the line of research Up to 100 points

 

  • 3° – If the candidate has not taken the POSCOMP exam in 2021 or 2022 or does not indicate in the registration form that the exam grade should be considered for this selection process, the evaluation criteria will be considered with the weights below:
DA: Academic Achievement
  • Academic Transcript (up to 35 points)
  • Curriculum Vitae (up to 30 points)
  • Recommendation letters (up to 35 points)
Up to 100 points
AL: Adequacy of the profile of candidates to the line of research Up to 100 points

 

  • 4° – In the cases provided for in § 2 and § 3, the final NF grade of the candidate will be given by NF = (DA + AL)/2
  • 5° – The PPGC does not guarantee the granting of an academic scholarship to those approved in this call for application.
  • 6° – For candidates for admission in the broad competition modality, the final minimum NF score for approval will be 70 (seventy). For candidates for positions related to Affirmative Actions, as described in Art. 2nd, the final minimum NF grade for approval will be 60 (sixty).

Art. 9°. The application process and selection of candidates, aiming to enter from August to October 2023, will follow the following calendar:

The disclosure of candidates exempt from the registration fee and those selected for the Master’s degree (in the first and second call) will be carried out by email to the candidates and will appear on the PPGC website.

  1. Registration Procedures

Art. 10°. Registration will be made exclusively through the online registration system available on the PPGC website (https://www.inf.ufrgs.br/ppgc/sistema/inscricoes/). In addition to filling in the form fields, you will need to attach, through the registration system, files with scanned copies of the following documents:

Documents required for submission:

  1. Graduation diploma or certificate that you are completing your graduation;
  2. Complete academic record of the undergraduate course;
  3. CNPq Curriculum Vitae Lattes. Alternatively, the template available in the online registration system can be used;
  4. A 3×4 photograph;
  5. Official identity document and CPF or passport in the case of foreigners (page with photo and identification data);
  6. When completing the online application form, the applicant will be asked to provide the contact details of at least two people who will provide letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters are sent digitally by the recommenders themselves, using the same application system that candidates use.
  7. For candidates for positions related to Affirmative Actions, candidates must attach the self-declaration form as described in Art. 2nd. Depending on the group indicated on the self-declaration form, the required supporting documentation (if applicable) must also be attached to the candidate’s application.
  1. Registration fee

Art. 11°. Foreign candidates residing outside the country are automatically exempt from paying the registration fee.

Art. 12°. As described in CONSUN Resolution No. 015, of January 13, 2023, candidates in groups II – indigenous or III – quilombolas will be automatically exempted from paying fees related to the selection process.

Art. 13°. The other candidates must pay a registration fee of R$ 70.00 (seventy reais). The Union Collection Guide (GRU) and instructions for its correct completion are available in the online registration system. Payment schedules for dates after the deadline for payment will not be accepted as confirmation of payment of the registration fee.

Art. 14°. Low-income applicants who require exemption from the application fee must send the following documents by email (ppgc@inf.ufrgs.br) to the PPGC Secretariat by the date specified in Section IV. Calendar:

  1. Justification letter for exemption request;
  2. Birth certificate;
  3. Proof of income of the candidate and other family members residing with the candidate, attesting to the need for exemption.

VII. Enrollment

Art. 15°. In order to enroll, it will be mandatory to present the diploma of the undergraduate course, or a certificate of completion confirming that the student has completed the course, including the defense of final undergraduation work.

VIII. Other Provisions

Art. 16°. The selection is valid for admission from August to October 2023, and it is not possible to postpone admission to later periods. Candidates who do not confirm their admission by the deadline stipulated in this call will lose the right to the position.

  • 1° – The Graduate Commission, until the dates stipulated in the calendar in Art. 9, will publish the second call, with the means of dissemination in accordance with Art. 9°, with the selection of new candidates to fill positions still available. The selection of these new candidates will follow the same procedures established in Section III. Selection Procedures for this notice.

Art. 17°. Information on the PPGC’s lines of research and on the research topics of its advisors can be found on the program’s website, at http://ppgc.inf.ufrgs.br, tab “Research”, “Linhas de Pesquisa” .

Art. 18°. Other useful information about the selection process will be published on the PPGC website at http://ppgc.inf.ufrgs.br.
