abstract = {This paper describes the goals, current state, and future directions of the PORVIR-5G project, which aims to develop and demonstrate a programmable fronthaul and backhaul integrating wireless with optical-packet networks and cloud computing solutions. The project exploits virtual network splits that optimize resource allocation across the wireless, optical, packet, and compute/storage domains. The key enablers for PORVIR-5G are (i) packet slicing, wireless, and optical resources, controlled by (ii) deep programmability interfaces, where devices are configured by network functions to provide the required performance for future applications on the Internet. This programmability allows for a more refined (iii) end-to-end and multilayer orchestration, considering the users’ quality of experience (QoE) for each type of application over the network. This paper also validates and demonstrates the proposed programmability and virtualization capabilities of the PORVIR-5G through demonstrations, thereby enabling the key performance demands of 5G networks.},

abstract = {5G networks support various advanced applications through network slicing, network function virtualization (NFV), and edge computing, ensuring low latency and service isolation. However, private 5G networks relying on open-source tools still face challenges in maturity and integration with edge/cloud platforms, compromising proper slice isolation. This study investigates resource allocation mechanisms to address this issue, conducting experiments in a hospital scenario with medical video conferencing. The results show that CPU limitations improve the performance of prioritized slices, while memory restrictions have minimal impact. The generated data and scripts have been made publicly available for future research and machine learning applications.},

abstract = {The fifth generation of mobile networks (5G) has introduced significant advancements in data transfer rates, latency, and device density, empowered by softwarization, virtualization, and disaggregation of network functions. Open-source initiatives have played a crucial role in enabling software-based 5G network deployments on commodity hardware, driving the growth of private 5G networks and testbeds, and fostering research and innovation in the field. However, the maturity level of such open-source technologies is still insufficient for highly performant large-scale deployments. Current 5G performance testing methodologies rely predominantly on a black-box approach, which overlooks the complexity of interactions between 5G core components, limiting the ability to explain performance bottlenecks. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a new observability-driven methodology for 5G core network performance testing, which improves visibility into internal component interactions. We contribute to research and innovation in 5G and beyond field by (i) implementing testing workloads that are able to simulate varying user arrival rates and (ii) integrate a set of cloud-native observability tools to allow white-box performance evaluation of the 5G core.},

abstract = {Network Slicing (NS) is an essential technique extensively used in 5G networks computing strategies, mobile edge computing, mobile cloud computing, and verticals like the Internet of Vehicles and industrial IoT, among others. NS is foreseen as one of the leading enablers for 6G futuristic and highly demanding applications since it allows the optimization and customization of scarce and disputed resources among dynamic, demanding clients with highly distinct application requirements. Various standardization organizations, like 3GPP’s proposal for new generation networks and state-of-the-art 5G/6G research projects, are proposing new NS architectures. However, new NS architectures have to deal with an extensive range of requirements that inherently result in having NS architecture proposals typically fulfilling the needs of specific sets of domains with commonalities. The Slicing Future Internet Infrastructures (SFI2) architecture proposal explores the gap resulting from the diversity of NS architectures target domains by proposing a new NS reference architecture with a defined focus on integrating experimental networks and enhancing the NS architecture with Machine Learning (ML) native optimizations, energy-efficient slicing, and slicing-tailored security functionalities. The SFI2 architectural main contribution includes the utilization of the slice-as-a-service paradigm for end-to-end orchestration of resources across multi-domains and multi-technology experimental networks. In addition, the SFI2 reference architecture instantiations will enhance the multi-domain and multi-technology integrated experimental network deployment with native ML optimization, energy-efficient aware slicing, and slicing-tailored security functionalities for the practical domain.},

abstract = {Open source implementations of software-based network components have become a viable alternative to deploy and operate 5G networks. Although these implementations provide great flexibility, overall network performance becomes dependent not only on the choice of the software stack, but also on its combination with suitable hardware. In this context, performance testing becomes an essential tool to assess the behavior of these software-based mobile networks under different deployment scenarios. Therefore, the goal of this work is to analyze how the different open source implementations of the 5G network core behave for the execution of procedures at scale. To achieve this goal, we propose and apply performance tests on some of the main open source implementations of the 5G network core. We focus on the evaluation of the performance of two essential procedures: (i) the user equipment registration and session establishment and (ii) the streaming of user data over parallel data plane connections. Among the main results obtained, it was possible to observe that the open source implementation free5GC presents better performance regarding data plane bit rates, while Open5GS shows better stability during the registration process of multiple devices.},

abstract = {5G networks have imposed a drastic shift in how mobile telecommunications must operate. In order to comply with the new requirements, solutions based on network function virtualization (NFV) and network slicing must be carried out. Regarding NFV in particular, the trend towards pulverizing the monolithic software in a microservices-based one carries network management challenges to operators. The deployment and integration of one or more network management software with the managed services is as important as it is delicate, as stringent requirements of 5G applications must be respected. In this paper, we propose SWEETEN as a solution for automating the deployment and transparently integrating network management solutions from different management disciplines, in this case, monitoring and security. Demonstrating its usability through a intelligent healthcare use case, SWEETEN is shown to transparently provide monitoring and security solutions for a complete network slice, enabling compliance with privacy requirements through minimal low-level interventions from the network slice tenant. The results show how SWEETEN integration of monitoring and security disciplines can assist users in guaranteeing the correct operation of their deployments regardless of the underlying software solutions used.},

abstract = {The advent of the function virtualization concept, especially that of network functions, leads to important benefits for future networks. Although the orchestration of virtualized functions presents gains for network operators and clients alike, the overhead for moving functions has not been thoroughly explored so far, especially considering functions virtualized by using container technologies. In this work, we investigate orchestration costs associated with the migration of containerized virtual functions. To this end, we first perform a systematic literature review on state-of-the-art virtual function migration costs, electing time and data transferred as so. We then use a well-known container platform (LXD) to perform several orchestration experiments in a controlled environment. By analyzing the container migration process in smaller complementary steps, and designing experiments to evaluate them individually, a pattern for migration costs is observed. Linear regression is then used to derive a prediction model for the necessary time and data transferring for performing a container migration. To assess the predictor’s accuracy, we present a cloud computing use case where the predictor is deployed. Results indicate that predictions can be accurate within reasonable range, and therefore orchestration algorithms may be improved by accounting for similar prediction models when determining the migration of one or more virtualized functions.},

abstract = {As Cloud Computing (CC) branched areas such as Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) and Fog computing are still on growing research interest. The creation of new tools to improve quality and speed the experimentation in such areas is a general interest. In this article, we propose COPA, an experimenter-level container orchestration tool for networking testbeds. This tool provides a friendly interface for the experimenter test container orchestration algorithms which can start, stop, copy, and even migrate a container from one host to another. COPA also includes network/resources monitoring to feed the experimenter’s orchestration algorithm so that it can make decisions based on real-time environment information. Furthermore, the experimenter can automatize the experiment scenario setup and deployment by pre-configuring in COPA. This tool helps the experimenter in testing different scenarios and quickly changing experiment parameters. Considering these features, COPA aims to provide an experimentation architecture to deploy and test container orchestration algorithms. Furthermore, we provide a case study explaining how COPA can be a key tool in the MEC and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) experimentation environments. This tool was already deployed in Federated Union of Telecommunications Research Facilities for an EU-Brazil Open Laboratory (FUTEBOL) testbeds as part of the control framework and was well validated by the project reviewers and partners.},

abstract = {Forthcoming 5G systems promise a myriad of new and improved applications, relying on Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to realize some of 5G's stringent requirements. To guarantee that these requirements are met, network monitoring and management must be deployed and fine-tuned according each application's specificity. As Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) adhere to the microservice paradigm, picking and configuring the right tools is not a trivial task for users. In this paper, we present SWEETEN, a system that assists user to operate a 5G network with the appropriate management tools for the job, in a transparent manner to the user. By enriching their function stack with high-level annotation of the management features they desire, users can easily deploy an augmented stack with both network and management functions. A prototype is presented and evaluated in a dynamic Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) split case study. The evaluation confirms that SWEETEN can assist users in effortlessly deploying complex management solutions, while incurring in acceptable deployment time overhead and negligible computational overhead for throughout the functions life-cycle.},

To understand and configure such a complex network to their best interests, users must use several management tools that they are not necessarily familiar with. abstract = {Dynamic Cloud Radio Access Networks (C-RAN) is an emerging wireless architecture that splits radio functions in a hierarchical cloud-based infrastructure. In Dynamic C-RAN, wireless functionalities can be divided into smaller components and distributed along with a hierarchical cloud infrastructure. Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) concepts have been recently investigated to facilitate managementrelated operations of these wireless functionalities. Despite the advances in providing flexible NFV orchestration for Virtualized Network Functions (VNF)s, there is still a lack of solutions aware of VNFs internal composition, a key characteristic of split virtualized radio functions. In this article, we advance NFV orchestration in a Dynamic C-RAN scenario presenting Orchestra, a split-aware NFVO for Dynamic C-RAN with support to customizable orchestration algorithms for different radio function splits. Orchestra is validated through instantiates and migrates VNFCs following the decisions of personalized orchestration algorithms, with a petty impact in the VNFC’s deployment and migration time.},

abstract = {The increasing demand for wireless broadband connectivity is leading mobile network operators towards new means to expand their infrastructures efficiently and without increasing the cost of operation. Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) is a step towards virtualization-based, low-cost flexible and adaptable networking services. In the context of centralized baseband architectures, virtualization is already employed to run baseband processing units as software on top of conventional data center hardware. However, current virtualization solutions consider atomic virtualization, i.e., single virtual machines implementing all baseband functionalities. In this article, we propose the fine-grained virtualization of baseband processing to achieve a more flexible distribution of the processing workload in centralized architectures. We also evaluate the benefits of our approach in terms of: (i) The bandwidth requirements for each fine-grained distribution option, (ii) the latency experienced by mobile users for each fine-grained distribution option, and (iii) the total CPU usage of each fine-grained baseband processing function.},

abstract = {Dynamic Cloud Radio Access Network (Dynamic C-RAN) is an emerging wireless architecture that aims for flexibility, business agility, adaptability, among other benefits. In a Dynamic C-RAN, wireless functionalities can be split into smaller components and distributed along a hierarchical cloud infrastructure. Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) concepts have been recently investigated to facilitate management-related operations of these wireless functionalities. Despite the many advocated advantages of the function's splitting and the effectiveness of NFV orchestration solutions, both academia and industry are considering Virtualized Network Functions (VNF)s as atomic elements, disregarding the potential advantages of splitting VNFs into several different components. Aiming to improve VNF orchestration in Dynamic C-RAN scenarios, in this paper we propose Maestro: an NFV orchestrator for wireless environments that is able to decide among several possible VNF compositions which are more suitable for each situation. Maestro is designed to operate using different decision mechanisms that can be defined based on network operators' needs. We evaluate the effectiveness of our proposal by modeling the orchestrator's decision mechanism as a linear programming problem. Thus, we show how fronthaul bandwidth consumption can be reduced threefold considering different VNF compositions against atomic VNF placement.},

abstract = {Dynamic Cloud Radio Access Network (Dynamic C-RAN) is an architecture wireless that aims benefits such as flexibility and agility to new five generation (5G) network. In Dynamic C-RAN, the radio functions processing is distributed along of a hierarchical of clouds. Network Functions Virtualization has been investigated the facilities to employ this wireless functions. NFV offers orchestration of split of radio functions into Virtualized Network Functions (VNF). The orchestrator needs to consider strict requirements of C-RAN between distributed components of VNF to get real earnings. In this work, we propose a detailed evaluation of Maestro - an NFV orchestrator for wireless environments aware VNF composition. We evaluate Maestro through of linear model programming, considering the effectiveness and orchestration overhead for deciding the best place to VNF components. In addition, we evaluate the trade-off between network data rate and time to generate the placement of components.},

abstract = {In programmable virtual networks, simple tasks, like installing software, can be extremely complex. This complexity occurs mainly because the code transfer and initial functional settings in network execution environments are not automated. In addition, the same tasks have different requirements in each service lifecycle stage. In this sense, we propose the App2net platform for enabling the transfer and configuration of network applications in programmable virtual networks that use heterogeneous execution environments. We also propose a taxonomy for grouping code transfer techniques and, based on such techniques, we develop models for code transfer. A prototype has been implemented and tested on realistic network topologies commonly found on the Internet. Results allow us to identify which models improve code transfer consuming fewer resources, regarding service lifecycle stages and network topologies.},

abstract = {The disheartening and thorny path followed while deploying new solutions in the core of current computer networks, culminates in a low rate of emergence of innovation. Several researches proposed applying Software Defined Networks (SDN) and the Network Virtualization (NV) concepts to reverse this rate. However, many gaps and open challenges were observed in the application of these concepts together. In this paper, we propose the ProViNet platform, which merge the SDN and NV concepts to provide a fast and safe deployment of innovations in the existing network infrastructure. ProViNet advance the state-of-art introducing the concept of Network Programming as a Service, in which applications are built simply by composing control plane services. Such approach encourages End-Users to develop and share novel network solutions, fostering innovation. To prove concept and technical feasibility, we evaluate ProViNet with a prototype that allowed demonstrating virtual network infrastructure provisioning and programming.},
