abstract = {This survey paper examines emerging network approaches for military Command and Control (C2) systems. An extensive literature review is provided along the text on network-centric C2 systems. Also, it provides a comprehensive analysis of the paradigm based on C2 concepts, mapping the significant requirements of networked C2 systems to emerging approaches. Likewise, the paper explores ways to simulate networked battle scenarios realistically, leveraging the support of multi-agent systems and network simulations. The article offers a trend analysis of combining network approaches to design innovative solutions and a promising usage of multi-agent systems for realistic simulations. In conclusion, it discusses future implementations emphasizing advanced networking solutions to integrate different technologies and to drive technology boundaries to improve the effectiveness of networked military C2 systems.},

abstract = {Digital Twin is the name given to a type of system that has full integration between a physical part and a digital part updated in real time. In general, they are large-scale systems with intense flow of data between their parts (physical and digital). To perform data acquisition in this type of system, protocols such as MQTT are commonly used. This work recognizes the limitations of this protocol when using high traffic conditions and explores alternatives to increase data flow while minimizing message loss and resource usage. For this, the native cluster mode of MQTT broker implementations is used, adding a component to the system architecture which we call "Cluster Manager". This component was developed with the objective of monitoring the health of a cluster of brokers and adjusting the composition of the cluster to the message flow. The results of the implementation of this component helped to determine loss margins and latencies in sending critical messages, using different strategies to scale the cluster under representative workloads of Digital Twins applications. It has also been determined that using very sensitive parameters to scale the system causes more nodes than necessary to be instantiated and resources wasted.},

abstract = {The use of IoT-related technologies is growing in several areas. Applications of environmental monitoring, logistics, smart cities are examples of applications that benefit from advances in IoT. In the military context, IoT applications can support the decision-making process by delivering information collected directly from the battlefield to Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) systems. Taking the benefit of the installed IoT network in the battlefield, the use of the data collected by the IoT nodes is a way to improve resiliency and increase the survivability of networks, as well as to optimize the use of available resources. Towards improving the communication network present on the battlefield, this work presents a context-aware environmental monitoring system that uses real-time battlefield information to increase military networks’ resilience and survivability. The proposed approach is validated by a proof-of-concept experiment. The obtained results show that the implementation of this system can improve the communication process even when the network is exposed to unfavorable climatic factors.},

abstract = {The growing demand for new network technologies is mainly related to the new Internet of Things products market, which is increasingly present in our daily lives. The application of the Radio over Fiber technology is the great bet for the cellular networks’ next generation development, which should undergo massive insertion of Internet of Things devices in the next years. The benefits derived from the use of optical fiber guarantee the fundamental support to the communication of new applications, besides reducing the costs involved in the implementation and maintenance of a traditional network. In this paper, we compare the transmission made through Radio over Fiber structures with a fully wireless transmission, in relation to packet loss using the IEEE 802.15.4 communication protocol for the Internet of Things.},

abstract = {Smart grids and smart homes improve energy management by coupling communication capabilities to their devices. Due to computational constraints of these devices, employment of simplified communication protocols is necessary. In this paper, we investigate the use of communication protocols based on CoAP and 6LoWPAN in smart home environments. Specifically, we analyze the vulnerabilities a smart home employing CoAP and 6LoWPAN may be susceptible to. We also present a performance analysis of the use of these protocols for ensuring secure communicationsin smart homes.},
