Resumo:
This dissertation presents an interface for the visual analysis of georeferenced haplotype networks, which are specialized graphs used in biological evolutionary studies. The haplotype networks are generated from DNA obtained from specimens collected in field work. The interface extends a system called TaxonomyBrowser, which fully supports specimen data used in biodiversity and evolution research. Before this system was created, our collaborating scientists needed to manage multiple spreadsheets with different formats, whereas with the data management solution, all needed data will be inside the system.
The other part of the solution is the presented interface, which solves the visual analytics issue. The interface contains the visualization of the haplotype network and three other interactive techniques: a minimum spanning tree extracted from the network, a parallel coordinates plot and a bar and line chart. These visualizations are related to a map where location markers for the collected specimens are drawn.
The visualization techniques were validated through an experiment with expert users, which included practical questions and a qualitative questionnaire. All techniques were successfully validated, with suggestions of improvements for some aspects of the interface.
Palavras-chave: Information visualization, interaction, visual analytics, computer graphics.
