Entrevista:

1. What do you think of the research in Computer Science in Brazil?

Computing research started in the 1960s in North America, which enabled North America to develop and maintain a lead since then. Europe comes close second after North America. In the past 20 years, other regions, such as Asia and Latin America, have dramatically increased their computing-research activities. Brazil is now a major player in the global computing-research ecosystem. To assess how Brazil is doing, I’d recommend comparing to institutions in Latin America and Asia. Brazil should strive to keep its leadership in Latin America and compete well against Asia.

2. How do you see your field of research in ten years from now?

For the past 50 years increased compute performance have been handed to us on the silver platter of Moore’s Law. This is now coming to an end, as Moore’s Law will die in 10-15 years. This means that continued increase in compute performance will depend on better algorithms and systems. This is a great opportunity for computing research. My own research focus is on algorithms anchored in logic. I expect this area to become more and more important, as Moore’s Law grind to a halt.

3. Any advice for young researchers?

To be good in research, you have to enjoy doing it. I have been doing research for the past 35 years, and it is still a joy ride. So my advice t young researchers is “have fun”. If you enjoy doing research, you will be good doing it.
