Palestra com Prof. Barry Smith

INF receberá a visita do Prof. Barry Smith, da Universidade de Buffalo dos EUA

Barry Smith é professor de Filosofia, Informática Biomédica e Ciência da Computação na Universidade de Buffalo e professor visitante na Universidade da Suíça Italiana em Lugano. Ele também é Diretor do Centro Nacional de Pesquisa Ontológica e foi durante muitos anos consultor de Hernando de Soto, Diretor do Instituto para a Liberdade e Democracia no Peru, em projetos relacionados ao avanço dos direitos de propriedade e negócios entre os pobres nos países em desenvolvimento. Foi o responsável pela criação da ontologia Basic Formal Ontology, adotada como padrão pela associação Industrial Ontology Foundry e largamente adotada na área de Biomedicina.

Prof. Barry é pesquisador visitante no projeto Parametrização da Geometria e Arquitetura de Reservatórios, desenvolvido pelo INF-UFRGS em cooperação com a Petrobras. Neste papel, estará em Porto Alegre entre 22 e 26 de Janeiro quando fará uma palestra sobre seu novo livro “Why Machines Will Never Rule the World: Artificial lntelligence without Fear”.

Em sua visita ao Instituto, prof. Barry ministrará a seguinte palestra:

Title: ChatGPT & Co. The Glory and the Misery

Abstract/Content: The impressive achievements of ChatGPT and other new large language models (LLMs) have led some to believe that humanity is on the road to creating an Artificial General Intelligence — a machine, in other words, that would have intelligence capabilities equal to, or even exceeding, those of human beings. We will examine what can really be achieved with LLMs, and draw from there more sensible conclusions about what this will mean for human beings in the years to come.
