Abstract:
IBM Brazil Research Laboratory and Smart Devices Technology Center
The talk will describe the role of IBM Research including the newly announced Brazilian Research Laboratory in IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy. Particular emphasis will be given to describe the challenges faced by the microelectronics industry, in both the device and the packaging area, and how IBM is tackling these issues through establishment of collaboration ecosystems.

He has just been named manager of the Smart Devices area of the recently announced IBM Brazil Research Lab. Before that he was Senior Manager of the Electronics and Optical Packaging department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Hts., NY, which he joined in 1984. He received a diploma in chemistry and a doctorate in polymer science from the University of Freiburg, Germany, after which he went to UFRGS to teach a course in polymer chemistry followed by post-doc years at UMass, Amherst. In his most recent position he had responsibility for IBM’s worlwide packaging research effort. He co-authored over 90 research papers, holds 36 (24 US) patents and edited four books on polyimides. He is a Distinguished Fellow and Past President of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and a member of Jisso North America Council, chair of the ECTC subcommittee on Assembly and Manufacturing Technology, and member of IMAPS, IEEE, and the German Chemical Society.
