Título: Baseband Processing for Beyond 5G Wireless

Palestrante(s): Hazem Ali Resumo: The global commercialization of 5G is currently taking off. Both academia and industry are now actively looking into beyond 5G systems, to identify service requirements, key drivers, and challenges. Many techniques have been identified as key candidates for beyond 5G, including but not limited to, Large Intelligent Surfaces (LIS), Cell-free massive MIMO, drone communication, and Millimeter-wave/Terahertz communication. Among others, distributed and cooperative massive MIMO is an enabling technology for many of these beyond 5G systems. For instance, panels of antenna elements cooperate to construct LIS; geographically distributed access points jointly operate cell-free massive MIMO; Mobile devices/vehicles (both aerial and terrain) synchronize to form virtual large array. This new type of wireless technology is posing new problems for digital baseband processing, especially from the hardware implementation perspective. In our viewpoint, the traditional two-stage research methodology (theory study followed by implementation) should be revolutionized.

Mini-bio: Hazem Ali – Assistant Professor at Halmstad University: Experienced Research Scientist with a demonstrated history of working in both academia and industry. Carrying a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (FEUP) in Portugal, focused on Real-time Embedded Systems. Also, carrying an Master of science (MSc) in Computer Science and Engineering from Halmstad University in Sweden, focused on Embedded and Intelligent Systems. Over 17 years (since 2000) of international working experience inside and outside EU (Egypt, Sweden and Portugal). My working experience covers designing different aspects of embedded systems including hardware and software.
