PhD Thesis wins ACM SIGGRAPH Award

Thesis developed at PPGC wins important SIGGRAPH award

The Doctoral Thesis by Eduardo Simões Lopes Gastal entitled “Efficient High-Dimensional Filtering for Image and Video Processing” was awarded the ACM SIGGRAPH Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award. The work was developed in the Graduate Program in Computer Science at UFRGS under the supervision of Professor Manuel Menezes de Oliveira Neto. This is the most important international recognition for a Doctoral Thesis in Computer Graphics. The award ceremony took place on July 25th, 2016 in California, during the ACM SIGGRAPH Conference. This is a great achievement for Brazil, and demonstrates the quality of scientific research conducted in our country. The choice of the jury was unanimous:

“In recognition of the potential impact and the notable contributions you have made During your doctoral studies, the committee has unanimously selected you to receive the inaugural ACM SIGGRAPH Outstanding doctoral Dissertation Award at this year’s SIGGRAPH “.

ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) is the largest and most important scientific and professional society of Computer Science. ACM SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group in Graphics) is the specialized branch of the ACM Computer Graphics.

The doctoral work by Eduardo Gastal, was funded by CNPq and CAPES.
The Thesis also received the award for Best Doctoral Thesis in Computing, granted by the Brazilian Computer Society (SBC) during the conference held in July 2016 in Porto Alegre.
